We started homesteading in 2015 when we bought 86 acres in Lone Butte, British Columbia. We started with a couple baby lambs, followed by guinea fowl, ducks, goats and cattle. We mostly learned the hard way how to raise animals, and started out with a rather bad track record of more death than life on the farm. Thankfully we got lots of good advice from rancher neighbors and managed to turn the tide.
We lived in Lone Butte, BC for 6 years, until we had an opportunity to relocate to South Carolina, USA. In 2021 we purchased a new homestead in Travelers Rest, SC. In the process of relocating, we sold all of our animals other than our Maremma dogs, who came with us across the continent. This time the land was much smaller, at just 5.89 acres. However, since the climate is so much warmer, we find we can make far more use of the acreage than we could with much more up north.
Here in upstate South Carolina we purchased a new herd of Nubian goats, Dorper-Katahdin sheep, chickens and cattle.
